Maternal League is the only group of its kind in the Memphis area. Over 70 years ago, as Rebecca Harsh watched a young mother leave the hospital in the winter carrying her new baby wrapped in newspaper to ward off the cold, she vowed to help other mothers who couldn't afford blankets. That is when she formed “The Maternal Welfare League.” Ever since, we have worked to alleviate problems related to infant mortality and the health and welfare of mothers. Our organization helped fund the first prenatal clinic in South Memphis
Here are some of the reasons to join or help Maternal:
SIDS prevention through Safe Sleep education and our “This Side Up” Program (Check the “What is SIDS” page for more on this)
Our Signature Layette Program providing layettes (blankets, sleepers, t-shirts, etc.) through the Shelby County Health Department
Help financially and through volunteerism to Hope House, the only center of its kind in the state that provides aid to children affected with HIV/AIDS
Providing comfort to the babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at LeBonheur Children's Medical Center
These are only some of the many reasons to join Maternal. One of the most important reasons is the friendships that are formed. We are a group with a common purpose of helping mothers and babies in need.
